Appendix H — Leaders of the Official Opposition
The parliamentary role of Leader of the Official Opposition was not officially recognized in British Columbia until the formal establishment of political parties in the province. The 1903 provincial general election was the first to be contested along political party lines. Consequently, the Leader of the Official Opposition (previously the Leader of the Opposition) was formally recognized beginning in the 10th Parliament.

Leaders of the Third and Fourth Parties
Provincial general elections from 1903 to 1972 often produced results where additional political parties were represented in the Legislative Assembly that were not recognized as the Government Caucus or the Official Opposition Caucus. However, the term “leader of a recognized political party” was not introduced into the provincial Constitution Act (R.S.B.C. 1996, c. 66) until 1974, and the provision establishing a minimum number of seats for a party to have official status in the Assembly was introduced into the Act in 1979.
